Penguin!

So I started off with a piece of wood...

And my knife.
This part is where cuts number one and two came in.

And a dream.  But not really.  I just wanted to make something for Jenna.  As a thank-you, in a way.  I think she's really cool.  There are so many people that think that she's so cool (and she totally knows it, too) and I know that I'm no different.  May I just clarify something?  I think she's cool, but I also think that she is an interesting person.  She is kind.  Funny.  Honest.  All of those things are all very good qualities in a person.  She's great.  Sorry about that, back to the story.

Then I made a dent in the wood.
Awesome, right?  Well, six hours later, I had a penguin.

For the beak I carved it out of a piece of wood that I had cut off of the back of the penguin.  I had to carve out a small rectangular chunk out of the penguin's face.  This is where cuts number three and four came in, all on my hands except for the one where I stabbed myself in the leg on accident..

Then I had to make the beak the same size as the base of the beak and put wood glue in the hole and then I put the beak in.  It was a tight fit (which was the way that I had planned it; I had to make sure that the beak stayed in) and I let it dry for a few hours.

Then came the darker stain.
This is where cut number five came in.  I was trying to cut the dark stain off of the top of the penguin's foot.  I was cutting the top of the left foot.  I was being too firm with the knife and it slipped.  I could see my bone.  My bone.  It was the weirdest thing ever.  It didn't really hurt all that much, but.. Man, it was sure weird.  I cut right next to my middle knuckle on my index finger on my left hand.  It was by far the worst cut that I recieved from this project.  Pretty worth it I'd say.  I just hope she likes it..
The final project.  I had to re-cut eyes because I knocked one of them off and I couldn't find it.  I was pretty mad about that because it was wicked hard to make the eyes, let alone make them evenly sized.  I didn't.  The right eye (when you're looking at it from the front) is slightly taller than the left eye.
A total of over eight hours on this project.  I really had a lot of fun making this.  I'm glad that Jenna doesn't read my blog, or else this wouldn't be a surprise!

  1. I think that the first picture of the dark penguin was better. The eyes are actually visible and it doesn't look all lumpy.
